I have a friend whose mother was very ill. Her advanced age (87) and her condition made it difficult for her to get around to the point that she needed 24hr care. My friend got her a room in an assisted living home run by a couple that goes to the same church that we do so that she may have the professional care that she needs.
Finally, her health deteriorated to the point that it was time to seek palliative care. Hospice services where ordered and counseling and medications were provided. Unfortunately, the assisted living home she was in thought that the drugs made her too “sleepy” and they determined, of their own accord, that they were going to ween her from her pain medications.
My friend was very angry with the assisted living home and decided to do some of his own research on hospice care and pain management. He came across the site Kelly the Nurse and found information that was helpful in understanding what should be done for hospice patients suffering from a lot of pain.
With this new information, he contacted his mother’s hospice provider and informed them that the assisted living home was not treating her pain properly. The next day, hospice care services visited the assisted living home and educated them in the need for proper pain management for hospice patients. Once his mother’s pain was properly treated, she became more comfortable and was able to pass away free from pain.
The world wide web is an incredible resource of information and I applaud anyone that devotes their time to share information that they have to those that may need it.
